Our tannery located in the heart of the medina of Fes el Bali and one of the oldest traditional tanneries in Fes. The entire leather production process has retained methods unchanged since medieval times. There are around 100 artisan tanners working every day in several different workshops, from cutting the skins (of sheep, cow, goat and camel) to delivering the leather. Dyer workers work in hundreds of vats filled with a vast range of dyes and various liquids spread like a large palette of watercolors. Standing waist-deep in dyes and other chemicals, the work is hard and harmful to your health.
Five processing steps and 30 days of work are necessary to obtain the desired leather. After opening the skins with a knife at the level of the legs, they are soaked in a bath of lime and salt to remove the hair. They are then washed in a large mechanically operated wooden barrel-washing machine, then dipped in pigeon droppings to soften them. Then comes the coloring in the pools with so-called 100% natural ingredients (poppies for red or henna for orange). The last step, after drying in the sun, is finishing: the workers scrape the skins to remove the last imperfections and thus obtain quality leather ready to be transformed into leather goods by Moroccan cooperatives.

Initially recognized for its leatherwork qualities, then for its expertise in leathers and skins, the company is today an integral part of the leather goods heritage in Morocco.
